The archiv für alternatives schrifttum (afas) (archive for alternative literature) was founded in 1985 and is one of the oldest and largest independent archives in Germany. It is run by a non-profit association. The afas collects and indexes materials from the New Social Movements since 1945 and makes them accessible to the public.

  • Music (especially fanzines), literature, culture and art in the independent scene
  • Left-wing alternative groups at selected universities (mainly in North Rhine-Westphalia)
  • Green-alternative parties and groups (mainly from North Rhine-Westphalia)

 

Document types:

  • Archive material (internal documents such as minutes, correspondence, working and discussion papers, board documents, manuscripts, etc.)
  • Gray literature (newspapers, magazines, leaflets, brochures, documentation, posters, flyers, etc.)
  • Photos, audio and video cassettes
  • Museum material (buttons, campaign material, banners, display boards, T-shirts, etc.)
